Aquarium wins bid for 2012 International Aquarium Congress

8 October 2008 | Two Oceans Aquarium

The Two Oceans Aquarium, in partnership with the Cape Town International Convention Centre Bureau, is thrilled to announce that it has successfully won the bid to host the 8th International Aquarium Congress (IAC) in 2012. Competing against facilities in Europe, the Aquarium’s bid means that the Congress will be held not only in Africa, but also in the southern hemisphere, for the first time!

Dr Patrick Garratt, Managing Director of the Aquarium said, “We are extremely proud of this achievement. Although we are not a large aquarium by international standards, but a ‘medium-sized’ facility at the southern tip of Africa, we are highly regarded by the international aquarium community. We thank our colleagues who endorsed our bid and we look forward to hosting an unforgettable 8th IAC”.

Apart from the fact that we have the capacity to host delegates to the Congress in world-class facilities and hotels, delegates will have unique opportunities to experience the best that South Africa has to offer in terms of its natural beauty and the wonders of its bountiful animal and plant life. We have no doubt that Cape Town will enthral the delegates with its warm hospitality, magnificent scenery and wide range of activities.

The IAC is held every four years and is attended by directors and curators from the top aquariums in the United States, Europe and Asia. It provides an opportunity for public aquarium professionals to share and learn about new developments in conservation, research, technology, management and other related issues for the industry.

The first IAC was held in Monaco in 1960 while the most recent was held in Shanghai in 2008.
